Elfriede G. Eager Memorial

Elfriede G. EagerScholarship Fund Gifted to Three Gaits

Elfriede Eager loved children and animals, and they loved her. In loving memory, Elfriede's family established a scholarship fund at Three Gaits to allow children with disabilities to interact with horses through therapeutic horsemanship.

Elfriede rode horses as a young adult in Germany. After moving to the United States, she married Richard Eager and moved to Evansville. Their children were blessed with being able to grow up with Shetland ponies and horses.

In September of 2011, Three Gaits hosted an open house for children with diabetes. It included various stations where children learned about caring for and riding horses. Lily, just having turned seven, decided this was something she would like to do. With the support of her great-grandmother, her grandmother, Eloise Eager, and the rest of her family, Lily started riding lessons at Three Gaits.  (Lily is pictured with Three Gaits program horse Emma)

Over the next five years, Lily worked with horses from Three Gaits, learning to walk, trot, and canter; she also learned her diagonals, correct leads, and how to groom, saddle and care for horses. Her balance, strength, and confidence improved. From there her great-aunt, Heidi Eager-Bryson, volunteered to buy Lily a horse, which Lily now cares for and shows in horse competitions through 4-H and other area shows. After five years with Three Gaits, Lily chose to move on and is even more dedicated to her horsemanship.

Riding has given Lily the opportunity to engage in an activity that gives her an independent sense of ownership and accomplishment. It established something for Lily to call her own, and to feel a stronger sense of personal accomplishment through her achievements.

In February 2017, Lily's great-grandmother, Elfriede or 'MeMe' as Lily called her, passed away at the age of 92. Elfriede's family realized how much Lily gained from her relationship with Three Gaits.

to Dena DuncanTo honor Elfriede's lifelong love for children and animals, her family established the Elfriede G. Eager Memorial Scholarship Fund at Three Gaits. The goal of the fund is to allow children with disabilities the opportunity to experience the benefits of Three Gaits' equine-assisted activities and therapies. Thanks to Elfriede's family's generous gift, the Elfriede G. Eager Memorial Scholarship Fund will provide many children from across southern Wisconsin the opportunity to participate in Three Gaits' life-changing activities for years to come.
