Horse Adoption Program

Our goal is to place all retiring members of our herd in safe, loving, and appropriate homes. If you are interested in obtaining a retiring school horse or pony through Three Gaits, please fill out the following application and return it to Three Gaits:

Our School Horses
Sponsor a Current Horse
Adopt a Retiring Horse
Donate a Horse

Three Gaits obtains school horses through donations, lease agreements, or purchases. Horses range from 7 years old to horses in their 20's, and sometimes even 30's! While we accept horses based on their temperaments, not their breeds, some of our most common breeds have been Quarter Horses, Paints, Appaloosas, and Arabians. Horses also have varied training/showing histories ranging from horses that competed successfully to horses that were mainly used as trail horses.

When the time comes to retire a school horse from our program, we first contact the former owner and then look for a retirement home. Horses may be retired for varying reasons. With utmost importance, we consider the physical and emotional health of the horses working in our program. If we deem at any point that a horse may no longer meet the needs of our programs, we pursue adoption.

Horses that are deemed unsuccessful in the program may have other talents that are simply not needed in our program. Our school horses must fill an incredibly demanding (both physically and mentally) job. We have had the pleasure of working with many fine horses over the years, but in order to be successful in the program they must be specifically adapted to therapeutic horsemanship. We have had many former school horses go on to be very successful in their new homes, with loving and appreciative families!

Three Gaits reserves the right to select and approve appropriate homes for retiring school horses. We want our horses to go to homes that will be a good match with their personalities, training, and age. Our horses will only be adopted with the understanding that they are not to be bred, given away, sold, or slaughtered.

If you feel capable of providing a permanent home for a retiring school horse, please complete the application. Once an application has been received and approved, we will add your name to the list of potential adopters. The waiting time for a horse can be as little as a few weeks to as much as a couple of years. The number of horses available for adoption varies from time to time, but we are committed to only offer you a horse that fits your requirements.

Again, thank you for your interest and support of our adoption program. We look forward to working with you!
